Fundamentals of Ayurveda

8 weeks

led by Dr. Padmini Ranganathan

Ayurveda is a unique health system which is thousands of years old and still relevant today. Base on the Atharva Veda and Rig Veda, it gives knowledge of life and how to maintain health and diseases. It’s entire system is based on the theory that the five elements or panchamahabhutas; pṛthvī~earth, jala~water, tejas~fire, vāyu~wind ākāśa~space, comprise the universe and the human body. The system of yoga is also based on this theory.

This is further simplified into the science of the 3 Doshas (tridoshas); Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. At a subtle level they are energy and gradually become gross to form the body. Ārogya or good health is to balance these tridoshas with proper eating habits, and lifestyle. A basic knowledge of Ayurveda puts us on the path towards understanding these concepts while complementing yoga practices by giving a Vedic perspective of the body and mind.

I am greatly honoured to have Dr. Padmini lead you through this course. She carries deep traditional knowledge, is a dear friend, was a doctor in our Mysore clinic with who I still work with my yoga therapy students. I have experienced her depth of knowledge first hand with my own health over the years and have seen her help may people come back to balance using the sister science to yoga, Ayurveda.

Padmini has been a practicing doctor of Ayurveda for over 15 years, trained in Tamil Nadu and lives in Mysore, India. She grew up around wellness as she is the daughter of a very senior Yoga Teacher in the T. Krishnamacharya Tradition.
